Axolotl Exhibit

Discover the extraordinary exhibit and get to know this fascinating species.

A salamander with unique characteristics

According to a legend from Toltec mythology, Xolotl, the god of fire and lighting, disguised himself as a salamander to avoid being sacrificed.

The axolotl, a remarkable Mexican amphibian, possesses the ability to remain "young" throughout its life, as it never surpasses its larval stage.

  • It is native to the lakes and canals of Xochimilco, near Mexico City.
  • It can regenerates lost limbs.
  • Breathes through the skin and also has lungs!
  • Lives permanently in water, surfacing occasionally in rare cases.
In this exhibit, you will learn more about this fascinating species in an environment simulated to resemble a trajinera from Xochimilco, which is its native habitat.

You'll gain insights about the importance of conserving this species.
