Find out what species you can meet and interact with at the Cancun's Interactive Aquarium.
Did you know the marine world is teeming with so many extraordinary creatures that we discover 2,000 new ones each year? With 70% of the Earth covered in water, scientists believe we've only met about 2% of all the species that call the deep sea home. Fortunately, an aquarium gives us a special peek into that vast and unknown universe.
At the Cancun Interactive Aquarium, you'll find a wide variety of marine species you won't want to miss. Some of the highlights include:
In the saltwater tanks at the Cancun Interactive Aquarium, you can meet the fascinating Pufferfish, known scientifically as Diodon hystrix. This unique fish is famous for its incredible defense mechanism. When it feels threatened, it rapidly gulps water to inflate its body to nearly double its size, causing sharp spines to stick straight out to scare off predators. It’s a truly fascinating reminder of nature's ingenuity.
In the world of invertebrates, the Hermit Crab stands out as a true master of recycling. Unlike other crustaceans, it doesn’t have its own hard shell, so it uses empty sea snail shells for protection instead. As it grows, it must find a new, bigger home, making its life a constant search for the perfect fit. Believe it or not, they can live for up to 100 years! Because this species of crab is so ancient, they are often called “living fossils.”
This turtle, known scientifically as Trachemys scripta elegans, is one of the most well-known freshwater species. They are distinguished by their excellent swimming skills and their love of sunbathing. You'll often spot them perched on rocks, logs, or other surfaces above the water. They do this to soak up warmth from an external source (the sun) to maintain a healthy body temperature.
Despite their fearsome reputation, the Piranha Red Belly (Pygocentrus nattereri) is one of the most fascinating species you'll ever see. They have a prominent jaw with razor-sharp teeth that interlock when they close their mouth. While this freshwater fish is a carnivorous predator, its reputation doesn't tell the whole story. In reality, it plays a crucial role in its ecosystem.
